Interview with Justin E Martin | Reflex Homme Exclusive

words: Collen Demerez

Keeping in the theme of this year's most eligible faces, this week I bring you one of the most exciting new male models in the industry today. Justin Martin has been a dark horse in modelling but this year is proving how big Justin is going to be. Having seen him on the runways for Hermes, Bottega Veneta and Versace and also appearing on the covers of Vogue Italia and more recently Man About Town, it’s clear that Justin posses a cross over appeal that makes him just as eligible for the women’s market as well as the men’s (an ability that is rare for male models and key to reach the top). His all-star quality grants him the poise to look effortless next to the likes of top model Gigi Hadid and this season we will be seeing that at an all-time high. This season Justin stars in the highly anticipated Calvin Klein campaign shot by the talented Lachlan Bailey. With various high profile projects of his coming out this year, there was no better time to introduce him and learn some more about him. This is what he had to tell me about himself when we sat down for an interview.

What’s your full name?

My full name is Justin Eric Martin, but my dad wanted to name me William because the last four generations were named William. So, I would like to change my middle name to that.

Where are you from?

I am from a small city named Woodstock in Canada, West of Toronto.

Describe yourself in three words?

Independent, easy-going, human.

When and how were you discovered?

My mother agent chased me down in the street in New-York September 2017. He asked me “What do you do?” and at the time I was really just roaming around the US with a backpack.

What was your first ever modelling job?

It was during NY Women’s Fashion Week September 2017, I walked for Sies Marjan.

You’re one of the very few men to be on the cover of Vogue Italia, do you remember how you reacted when you saw your cover with Gigi by Steven Klein last year?

I hadn’t been modelling long so I was still working at home between modelling as a landscaper and one day, I checked my phone at lunch break, and it was going crazy because the issue came out and I realized how big and real it was!

What has been the biggest highlight of your modelling career so far?

Was working with Steven Klein for Vogue Italia and now the latest Calvin Klein SS19 Campaign with Lachlan Bailey which both teams were great to work with and all very inspiring.

You’re one of the leading stars in the new Calvin Klein SS19 Campaign, how does it feel to have landed such a huge campaign?

It was so amazing to be on this campaign, I never would have expected this a year ago! It is my First Campaign ever and I was glad it was with such a great team, everyone clicked so well it made it feel easy and natural.

Is there a brand you’d like to work with in the future?

I would love to work with YSL, Dior, Prada, Givenchy and Hermès again, I really love all these brands too.

What’s your favourite city work?

There’s not one place in Particular, as I love the energy of New-York also the beauty of Europe.

Who’s your biggest inspiration in life?

My Parents.

What is your favourite song right now?

There’s a song I heard a lot growing up that I’ve been listening to a lot the last few weeks, Change by Blind Mellon.

Best advice you’ve ever been given?

Trust your instincts.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

Never know where life is gonna take you. Wherever that is, my main goal is just to be happy.
