Interview with Désiré Quadjo Mia | Reflex Homme Exclusive

March 2, 2019

words: Collen Demerez

If you have been on any of my social media over this past year you would know this week’s model has been one of my few obsessions since I first saw him in the Tom Ford FW18 show last February. Who else would I be talking about but Désiré Mia, it takes a pretty strong face to stand out in one of the biggest shows of fashion month, alongside some of the industry's top male models. Maybe it’s his high fashion smile, gorgeous skin but Desire has that certain Je nes sais quoi (as say in France) that makes me excited for what he has to bring to fashion. Since Tom Ford we have seen him work for top brands like Tommy Hilfiger, walk the infamous Jacquemus SS19 show and star in a Topman’s FW19 campaign. This year, however, (as we predicted in our Reflex Top Best Faces List) is going to be a huge year for him, Desire is not only starring in Gant’s SS19 Campaign but also in Calvin Klein's new SS19 Campaign. With all these achievements in a little over a year, I had to sit down with him and learn a little more about him, here's what he had to say.

What’s your full name?

My full Name is  Désiré  Quadjo Mia.

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Hannover, Germany. Although ethnically I’m half Ivorian and half German.

How would you describe yourself?

I’m relatively quirky but also driven and quite passionate about things I love. Understanding how things work is far more interesting/important to me than just knowing a simple un-referenceable fact. I also feel like people generally assume from pictures that I’m meaner or more serious than I actually am.

How long have you been modelling and how were you discovered?

I started full time modelling as soon as I got signed after my 18th Birthday In August 2017. Modelling was something I thought about since I was about 16 years old. Back then, I spontaneously went visiting different agencies for a day in Hamburg during the summer break.  When I returned back home with different agency contracts, my surprised parents suspected them to be scam affiliated, leading to them prohibiting me from stepping into this business, until I would be old enough to sign the contracts myself after graduating school. The mother agency I’m signed to (Wilson MGMT) discovered me through a Photographer (S. Kilkenny) that found me on Instagram and referred me to them.

What was your very first modelling job?

My first job as a model was the Tom Ford F/W 18 Mens show during NYFW

Do you remember what was going through your head before that show?

Before the show, my excitement was incredibly high and I was very scared to do something wrong. While I was on the runway in my first look, I bumped my duffle bag against the exit wall of the runway on my way back and noticeably tripped over the bag with my knee. Back then I immediately thought that would be the end of my just freshly born career and that I would become known to be the model that stumbled over his duffle bag. That luckily did not happen, yet.

You’re starring in two of this season’s campaigns, one for Gant SS19 and the other Calvin Klein SS19, how do you feel?

First and foremost I feel very honoured and humbled to be a part of major fashion Campaigns. It is the result of ongoing work from the agencies that spent their devotion building my image and guiding me throughout the whole process. Thank you very much Wilson MGMT, Heroes Models, PMA and Supa. It always blows my mind imagining what the odds are, for a regular guy like me, to be featured on big advertisement screens for brands like Calvin Klein and Gant.

What is a brand you’d love the chance to work with and why?

In my opinion, people put too much emphasis on the actual brand, instead of paying attention to the different creative phenomenons behind every single fashion project. It was very fascinating to see how many people of different professions worked on the CK campaign. It would be super awesome to participate in additional similarly high production projects like that, independently of what label it would be for.

On top of modelling, you’re also a YouTuber, what got you into YouTube and making videos?

Creating videos has always been something I loved doing. As a kid, I watched a lot of YouTube and was inspired by how thought out some of the video concepts were.

What’s the most played song on your playlist right now?

At the moment my top three are ‘Only You’ by Steve Monite,  ‘Wertvollster Spieler’ & ‘Cryptocurrency multi-Trillionaire’ by Elvisu

What’s your favourite thing to do on your days off?

I love playing football (soccer), skateboarding and going to vintage stores. Sometimes, as corny as it might sound, I write poems about certain issues I see in my surroundings.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

My fields of interests are pretty diverse. Therefore, I can’t really tell myself where my journey is heading. In respect to that, I could see myself stepping into acting full time since that has always been one of my aspirations. Also, I would love to get to know more of the creative part behind the big camera, as in actual film production. If possible also at some point something that incorporates human psychology and biology.
