Marwan El Anbari ★ Interview

August 1, 2018

Words: Collen Demerez

My new model spotlight is one that I found the old-fashioned way, in the heat of men's fashion week in one of the many exclusive fashion parties of Paris. I was intrigued by how he seemed to stand out in a room full of models and with that sought to find out who he was. After some research, I quickly discovered he was one of the new faces currently blazing the fashion scene and ofcourse I had to introduce this upcoming it boy to our favoured Reflex readers. Who is he you ask? Well, this model's name is Marwan El Anbari, a name I'm sure you'll all come to know. Marwan has in the past season’s walked for major brands like Les Hommes, Givenchy and Giorgio Armani. With more impressively also walking on not one but two of Dolce & Gabbana's highly coveted runway shows, 'The Alta Sartoria' collection and 'The Naked King' collection this past SS19 season. Taking pride in knowing the stars of tomorrow, I had to sit him down for a candid interview and learn more about him.

What’s your full name?

Marwan El Anbari

Where are you from?

Perpignan (South of France)

How where you discovered?

I was a car mechanic when my ex-girlfriend thinking that I had the qualities to be a model sent photos of me to a huge and famous Parisian agency. They were interested in my profile and offered me to participate in a casting that they organized throughout France for the first time for men. I arrived in the final where we were more than 20 out of 5000 at the start, but only 8 were selected to sign a contract with this agency and I was not part of it, I was really sad and disappointed but while I was very resistant to the idea of making this cast I got caught and I did not let go. I was then spotted a few months later by a model agent who made me sign with an agency in Paris.

What was your first modelling job?

My first job was a presentation in Paris for Bobby Abley at the Paris Fashion week.

What is your favourite thing about modelling?

The experience you draw from it.

You’ve worked with big brands like D&G, Les Hommes, Givenchy and Armani, do you have a favourite highlight you can share about working with any one of these brands?

Actually I have many favourites highlights from working for these amazing brands that I love to share, like seeing all these photographers and people waiting at the exit of the shows to ask for pictures, questions and hugs. It’s really insane for me, as I said I use to be a car mechanic in a small town so it’s a huge change haha. Also walking with Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid for Givenchy in one of the most historical and cultural place (Bibliothèque de l'Institut national d'histoire de l'art) in Paris for my first season. Or even flying to Palermo in Sicily to walk on a red carpet wearing D&G clothes in a magical place with an orchestra playing classical Italian music while you are walking

If you could work with any brand, what would it be and why?

Without hesitation Calvin Klein. The provocative side of their campaigns has always attracted me and I love their underwear.

What do you do on your days off?

A lot of sport, learn things, play guitar and video games.

Name something you couldn’t live without?

I cannot choose between food, sleep, sun and sport

What would you be doing if you weren't a model?

I’ve always wanted to be an actor.

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

My parents because without them I would not be what I am today. Their values are for me a source of balance.

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

I would like to be an actor and continue to travel and improve myself in everything I like.

Special Thanx to Joan Tornay & Trend Models.
